That Place...

Spoiler alert: This post is entirely about bragging. There are very few phases when I feel that my life is perfect. This is an effort to capture such a phase.
------------------------------

That Place…

For the first time in years I feel that I am exactly at a place where I always wanted to be.

My writing is being received well from the readers. Pieces on Riverfront Development, Bhadbhut Barrage on Narmada, Pranhita-Chewella were received well… many were cross posted on some other sites. In fact I got email from my CEPT prof Saswat Bandopadhay that he read the article on Riverfront Development and he liked it. Anyone who knows Saswat sir will know the value of his email! A few days back a joint article on Smart Cities by me and Parineeta was cross posed on Conterview.org from Ahmedabad. I read the posted piece and was elated. It was excerpts from our article. And cutting many frills which Parineeta had added they had retained the core analysis of JNNURM which I had done. I was especially happy because I had written that particular piece on smart cities way back. About 3-4 months back. But it couldn’t be posted at that time because the hype about smart cities was over and it was out of news. But now with launch of AMRUT it is back in news and it was indeed right time to pitch it in. When I read the article I couldn’t help but appreciate myself that the analysis was indeed apt. And just yesterday I learned that Anil Awchat liked the article that I wrote in Simollanghan for nirman public and he asked Dr. Abhay Bang for a standalone copy of it.

When you know that the stuff you write is of some significance and is worth reading it just gives you a high. Well to stick to my reality- it gives me a high.

It took me years to believe in myself. I do not fit in conventional systems in so many ways. I could never tolerate school. To go through it for years was a torture. Same was a case with college. And all this while I believed that I was a defaulter. It was only after I joined Nirman that I learned that this present education system is indeed faulty.

I chose to do Planning in CEPT very consciously. But during the course and also while working in EMC I just felt that no one wanted to listen to what I was saying. I remember when we were doing the EIA for GIFT city near Gandhinagar, everyone was busy calculating impacts on construction activities like pollution due to vehicular traffic for construction materials, solid waste generated due to construction labour etc. I was the only one saying that the real impact would be that the project will trigger immense development in a region which is mostly a pasture. The signs were already there. Gentrification was as high as it could be. You could already see boards of several builders about proposed commercial complexes, residential complexes. No one really took it seriously, not the other students and not the profs. But I stuck to my stand and did the socio-economic analysis around this. And it was appreciated in the final jury by Prof C.K. Koshi who was a retired IAS. Years later when I was in Pyaras I learned that if project is going to trigger such development the likely cumulative impacts are mandatory to be assessed. So what I had been saying was in fact more than right!

It is only after joining nirman I learned that what I want to say is of a great significance. It has to be said.

Doing a 9-5 job was again a struggle. I just cannot do it. It suffocates me so much that it just dries up my creativity. Well so I changed my profile with SANDRP a few days back. And now I again work freelance, on assignment basis. And it cannot be better. I can work the way I want. I can work whenever I want. I can craft my day the way I want. I can concentrate on my yoga and dance. It is just perfect.

Thanks to my daily exercises my legs have now strengthened enough that I can appear for my first Bharatnatyam exam! This also it took me years to believe that I could do it. And for the first time I feel that it is doable.

I was just reading my previous blog posts. Many of them reflect my struggle. Struggle to reach that place. For years I have been craving to get there.

But now I think I am there.

A place where I know my worth. A place where have a little more confidence. A place where I don’t give a shit to what people say.

A place where I am happy.

The Bubble

Before you read this post, I wish to put a disclaimer. This post is not about flaunting my identity. It is an effort to be free from it, at which I miserably fail most of the times.
The Bubble

Field work is such a humbling experience.

Every time I have gone for field work, people have been exceptionally good to me. They have gone beyond their comfort zone to help me out. And apart from one or two small experiences I have never really come cross any ‘bad experience’ per say.

But its like, there is a reason why people are so good to me.

Whenever I go for field work, mostly for case studies, data collection, interviews of concerned activists, government officials etc. it is not just me, it is me with the baggage of all my different identities. And that is the game changer. Every single detail of my identity sets a very strong context for how I am treated.

My first identity is that I am girl. And in our society there are some rules laid down for this gender. Normally I am not expected to roam all by myself, in remote areas, with unknown people, at wee hours etc etc.
Secondly I am relatively young, and unmarried. Well, so, at this age my priority ‘has to be’ ‘marriage’.
Third my surname shows that I am upper caste girl.
Fourth- I am from a metro city like Pune.
Fifth- my clothes and accessories and gadgets show that I am from a well to do upper middle class family.
Sixth- My degree shows that I am a well-qualified professional.
The way I carry myself shows that I am used to roaming on my own.
And lastly I am a decent looking girl who can (to some extent) fit in conventional definitions of good looks ‘tall-fair-slim’.

So well all of this combined together becomes a very strong ‘feminine factor’ which is both biological and cultural. And it sort of forms a bubble around me. All these small details of my identity- they contribute to this bubble. Wherever I go that bubble surrounds me. It is like a cage.

So when people talk to me, they aren’t actually talking to me. They talk to this bubble. And they are being nice to it. They smile. They are courteous. If I have luggage they pick it up. They offer me seat. And it is sort of a big drama. And inside that bubble I am ‘aware’ that it is not me that they are nice to. It is that bubble.

And this bubble has been responsible for so many diverse and interesting experiences.

I remember when I first went to Aurangabad for field work with Pranjal we told rikshaw wala to drop at some decent hotel. So he took us to some decent hotel. There was a paan thela at the corner. Our rikshaw stopped. And we got down. The moment I stepped out, all the heads at the thela just swung. I could actually feel all the piercing looks! I don’t know if in Aurangabad people are not used an urban girl coming and staying in hotel.

When I went to Latur for field work with Seema, we had to split as we had to cover large area for survey and it was just two of us. So I was roaming in some random lanes in Latur and there was a bunch of boys following me all the time. But other than passing comments they did no harm. After covering a few households I realized I had to meet the local corporator to understand the situation of water supply in that ward. So I was inquiring about location of his house. I asked a person for directions. It was 7 o'clock in the evening. He asked me some details of my work. Then he thought for a moment, looked at his watch and said “Madam don’t go right now. He will be drunk and might misbehave with you. It is safer to go tomorrow morning.” So I decided to skip the visit and continued with household surveys. By 7.30 it was dark and the area where I was, was far from the main road. With intent of covering a few more houses I knocked on a door. It was a family of three. Husband, wife who were in their late fifties and their son who was a college going guy. They were really impressed with our project and the fact that I came all the way from Pune and was surveying alone in Latur. But they immediately got so worried for my safety. They just told me very sternly that I better wind up and go back to hotel. They said that their area was not safe for a girl to roam like that. Realizing that I might face problem getting a rikshaw, they told their son to drop me to main road. And so I got a drop.

When I used to go to Bhiwandi Municipal Corporation, I would often sit in water supply department. May be in some engineer’s cabin. The room would be jam packed with people, mostly men. And when I would enter the room and sit, they used to be visibly uncomfortable with my mere presence. And the funny thing was they never talked to me, if they wanted to ask me for tea, they would generally ask the other people “Order some tea for madam.” Then I would tell that I do not drink tea or coffee. Then they would again talk not to me but amongst them “Madam does not drink tea??”Then again I would answer that “No. I don’t.” Then they would talk to each other “Is madam from Pune?” Then I would answer “yes”. And this used to go on for quite a while. But Nobody will actually talk to ‘me’.

When I went to Yawatmal just 2 days back to meet a bunch of people opposing lower Penganga project, they were so mighty impressed that I got a five star treatment. When the person I was coordinating with realized that I had no place to stay, he took me to his house. Made me meet his entire family. Told every possible person that “She is M.Tech. from Pune!! She is here to see the work of our committee”. His wife made elaborate diner. And though they were impressed, all of them repeatedly told me that social work and all is ok, but I should get married soon. And they were visibly upset when I told them my younger sister has married before me!

When I had gone to meet a friend who stays in a remote village in Umarkhed tehsil of Yawatmal district, a bunch of ladies visited just to see who on earth has come from Pune. And when they came, I was (unfortunately) working on my laptop. After that they discussed at length how brave I was to come and do such work etc etc. And when I was on the way to Umarkhed from Nagpur, the guy sitting next to me in the bus became an instant fan. He started conversing by asking where am I coming from. Then asked for my education, family, why I was going to Umarkhed. He then went on bla-bla about how impressed he was with my work. I could see that he is just flirting. Then he asked me to show my palm and told me some random things about my nature and future. And then told me that lines on my palm were very nice!!I had a bright future!

Are you thinking I am glorifying myself?? NO. Absolutely not. Rather I want to say exactly the opposite. I am trying to detach myself from all this and look at it very objectively. And I clearly see how unfair it is on so many levels. I mean, instead of me if there was some guy from some small village, will he be treated equally ceremoniously? I don’t think so. Most definitely not. When people are exaggeratedly nice to me, it is not even amusing. It is annoying and thought provoking at the same time.

Fun part about the bubble around me is that everyone perceives it differently and then accordingly behaves with me. Some people are impressed, some just plain disapprove. So many of my distant relatives have this silent disapproval for my work, my values, my principles. Because I do not fit in their set of expectations of a ‘girl from a good family’ whatever. One of my grandmother calls me ‘bandit queen’ because I make frequent trips to Gadchiroli area which is naxal affected.
But in all these cases they do not really see me, reach me. They deal only with the bubble.

It is sort of suffocating.

Physical, Intellectual, Emotional and Social Safety

I have learned something recently that has liberated me from struggle of accepting people and situations to a great extent…
It’s a concept called P.I.E.S.
Physical, Intellectual, Emotional and Social safety.
The assumption is each person is doing his or her best, at that point in time to keep his or her PIES intact
And whatever is being done (may be wrong as per your judgment) is what that person genuinely believes in for keeping the PIES intact.
So for example I work for issues related to dams…. and much of my energy goes in dealing with ‘Why on earth would politicians bulldoze on someone else’s life for their own selfish monetary gains and their own fancy vision of development? (Most of the dam projects are not proposed in a participatory manner... have too many technical shortcomings, vested interests, political lobbies and cater to only a few people marginalising people who have to give up their lands for the submergence of back waters of the dams... Whose development and at whose expense? remains unanswered)… I couldn’t accept it… now this PIES theory sort of gives an explanation… they genuinely believe that this is how they have got to do to win the game… they need to earn more to retain power and they need more power to earn more money and this is what they ought to do in politics… money and power at any cost is probably their idea of their social safety…
Now the beauty of understanding this is…. I do not have to agree with what they believe but I sort of can understand the helplessness of the situation…
So even if I still completely disagree with what they do…. there is a space around it which helps me not get entangled in judging the person and reacting emotionally….
Another classic example is my dad…. He is brilliant and that’s his biggest problem….
He naturally has the best solution for everything or best approach for everything…. He has been managing at highest levels in his work all his life… been best in acads… cracked IIT (only he and a friend of his were selected for IIT from Nasik for his batch)… so it’s all excellent …. BUT…. That makes him a perfectionist manager at home as well all the time… and he keeps dominating every decision… every situation…. very casually orders for things to be done… keeps giving instructions and most importantly keeps insisting on going by his advice all the time….and it is very difficult to deal with… what he does not understand is that my very foundation.... my very core values are all borrowed from him… and I look up to him more than he understands…. only my definition of looking up to him differs than his own one…
I have had a tough time to deal with this for years…. I struggled for getting my freedom of making mistakes and learning from it… of exploring the world without tainting a perspective… without being given any kind of advice…..
And he is still the same…. All the more annoyed because I listen to him a lot less than I used to….
But after understanding the PIES theory I got a new perspective…. He actually completely and honestly believes that his advice is the best to go by for everyone in the house and especially me…  so it gives me a little more space to understand him and not react hastily to what he is saying or doing… at the same time I still am free to disagree with what he believes….
Its so liberating seriously…. because constantly judging people takes toll on you in various forms…
I learned about PIES very accidentally
I was talking to a friend who was working with a class of 6th standard in a school on experiential education… ExpEd essentially believes in getting the emotional continuum of students right before teaching them any acads… if the children are emotionally stable… and happy …. they learn a lot more easily…. and efficiently is what ExpEd assumption is…. So he was telling that at first there was a lot of emotional drain out in his class… which stabilized only after about two months… this also involved sorting out gender issues in the class….  Now mention of gender issues triggered my interest because I was struggling to accept something for past 2-3 years… When I had gone to Melghat to conduct a regional camp of Nirman for Medical students of some college from Yawatmal…. what I had encountered with was an immense sexist behavior of the boys in the participants… there were comments on me… teasing…. and not in a very healthy way…. All I kept wondering was ‘do they not understand that this is hurting me?’….
I had lost my confidence of dealing with groups entirely after that incidence…. I kept that question alive in my heart that what makes them behave like this…. When I talked with Aditya (the ExpEd friend) … he tried to explain this based on PIES theory… that these people are brought up the way that they feel like being macho is THE thing and being macho means being sexist…. They genuinely believe that they got to be macho for their social acceptance and being macho for them means being sexist….
So I do not have to label them as MSPs and discard them… I just need to understand that they are a product of too many processes…. And they are doing so to keep their PIES intact…
It was a eureka moment…. !!!!
I know its no way the answer…. But as I have said repeatedly said…. It just created a space around it and I can look at it in a sort of a detatched way….
It’s much much a freedom….
P.S. Matured readers will understand that I mean no disrespect for my dad... I love him :)

Beggar girl and the stray dogs...

Something happened today that has stayed in my mind like a frozen moment...

Me, Sajal and Shastri were standing near Cafe Goodluck ...
We were discussing about dams... Shastri has been working with Shashwat (an NGO working near Manchar, Pune). He was talking about the kind of issues the displaced families of Dimbhe dam are facing... These families are kaatkaries..  i.e. tribal... they have no proof of existence what so ever... and so are easily brushed away from the farce of rehabilitation and resettlement... the R&R process typically needs proof of owning a land to get a compensation... now-- these tribal have no proof of even their existence.... how are they supposed to have proof of owning a land?
Then Sajal was talking about Gosikhurd dam in Vidarbha... the dam was built 30 years back... and the struggle of nearly 16000 displaced families is still going on....
The development that we see around... owning to which urban residents enjoy much comfort and luxuries... stands essentially on lives of too many of such vulnerable families having to give up everything almost at a gun point... of the Government...

We were talking for long time... all this while 4-5 stray dogs were roaming around in the lane....
Suddenly all of them ganged up.... and started howling... alarmed we turned our heads... and saw that a very small fragile beggar girl was walking down and the dogs were about to attack her...the girl was so small and frail...she shuddered for a moment and was screaming with fear...

Shastri ran after the dogs with stones in his hand... the dogs fled... the girl was relieved....

What we witnessed in that quarter of a minute was exactly what we were talking about... Resemblance between the frail girl and the kaatkaries uprooted from their land was uncanny...

The talk resumed...and after a while we parted ways.... but I am still stuck at that frozen moment....
The small frail girl screaming with fear... and gang of dogs all set to tear her down....
